Prompting

Prompt engineering

Prompt engineering is the practice of writing, structuring and refining prompts to reliably get the image you want - using description, emphasis, negative prompts and iteration instead of leaving the result to chance.

If a prompt is the instruction, prompt engineering is the skill of writing that instruction well. It is the difference between rolling the dice and steering the model deliberately toward a specific look. None of it is magic - it is a small set of repeatable techniques.

Core techniques

  • Structure the prompt: lead with the subject, then layer style, lighting and composition so nothing important is buried.
  • Use a negative prompt to remove recurring problems (blur, extra fingers, watermarks) instead of rewriting everything.
  • Apply prompt weighting to push a key word up or down when the model under- or over-emphasises it.
  • Tune the CFG scale for prompt adherence, and lock the seed so you can change one thing at a time.

Iterate, do not restart

The real craft is iteration. Generate, look at what went wrong, and change exactly one thing - a descriptor, a weight, the CFG, the seed. Fix the seed so each change is an honest A/B test rather than a fresh roll of the dice. A few deliberate passes beat fifty random ones.

Shortcut: PixelForge's themed presets bake proven prompt engineering into each style and format, so you get a strong starting prompt without writing one from scratch - then refine from there.
Example

Start broad, then add one constraint at a time across iterations: subject -> style -> lighting -> negative cleanup.

Example prompt

a hand-poured soy candle on a linen surface, (matte ceramic vessel:1.3), soft window light, minimal product photography, shallow depth of field

Frequently asked questions

Is prompt engineering necessary for AI images?

Not to get an image, but yes to get the image you actually want, reliably. Modern models produce decent results from short prompts; prompt engineering is what turns a lucky result into a repeatable one and lets you direct style, composition and detail on purpose.

What is the fastest way to improve my prompts?

Change one variable at a time with a fixed seed. Iterating deliberately - tweak a single descriptor, weight or setting and compare - teaches you what each lever does far faster than rewriting the whole prompt every run.
