Resolution

Resolution is the pixel size of an image - its width by height. AI models generate best at a native resolution they were trained on; to go bigger and stay sharp you generate at a sensible size and then upscale.

Resolution is simply how many pixels make up an image, written as width by height (for example 1024x1024). More pixels means more detail and a larger usable size, but with AI image models you cannot just ask for any size and expect good results - each model has a native resolution it was trained around.

Native resolution and why it matters

Most diffusion models are trained on images of a particular size (often around 1 megapixel). Generate near that native resolution and composition holds together. Push far beyond it in a single pass and you get classic artifacts - duplicated heads, repeated objects, mushy detail - because the model is working outside what it learned. The aspect ratio you choose then divides that pixel budget into a shape.

Reaching larger, print-ready sizes

  • Generate at or near the model's native resolution for the cleanest composition.
  • Use upscaling to enlarge the result while adding believable detail - the standard route to 2K/4K.
  • Use a hires fix to add genuine high-frequency detail during a second diffusion pass.

Why it matters

Resolution decides where an image can be used. A web thumbnail or wallpaper needs far fewer pixels than a poster or a print-on-demand product. Generate at a sensible native size, then upscale to the final dimensions rather than forcing a huge generation up front.

Frequently asked questions

What resolution should I generate AI images at?

Start near the model's native resolution - commonly around 1 megapixel (for example 1024x1024, or 1344x768 for 16:9). Then upscale to your final size. Generating far above native in one pass often introduces duplicated subjects and other artifacts.

How do I get a high-resolution AI image for print?

Generate at a clean native size, then upscale. AI upscalers add plausible detail as they enlarge, so a 1K generation can become a crisp 4K file suitable for posters or print-on-demand products.
